Hi guys,

I have been city commuting every day in all weather for the past 5 months (4,000km).

The 1985 1JK has good gear ratios and the narrow profile for is great for lane splitting.

Here is a short Youtube video of Melbourne traffic today.

The tacho has been broken for a few weeks. Everything else is perfectly reliable.

Hi Rob,

that is a bit of a deja vue for me!

I bought my 1JK in 2007, when I lived in Melbourne and rode it around town and country quite a bit until moving back to Germany in 2011. Had (and still have!) a lot of fun with the bike. Longest trip was Melbourne - Albury - Great Alpine Road and back through Gippsland without any trouble. It is now probably the only SRX in Germany that has ever felt the tarmac of Phillip Island Race course.

The bike now has Ohlin shocks, Supertrapp exhaust and TTR600 carburetors which has boosted power for overtaking on the highway without sacrificing low rev torque.

whats the difference of the TTR 600 carbs? Are they bigger or just different in jetting? Sounds interesting.

Hi Michael,

The 1999 - 2002 TTR600 Belgarda has a larger left hand carburetor ... 30mm if I recall. The CV carburetor is also different but seems to have the same throat diameter.

This adds significant power in the mid to high range without losing low rev torque.

I read somewhere that the very last XT600 also used the same carburetors (with smaller jets).

You need to use another larger RH CV rubber inlet tube from the air box for the left carburetor to breathe (cut a larger hole in the plastic air box for the tube and also use a high flow air filter).

Unfortunately the larger TTR inlet stub (5CH) won't fit (does not line up with the air box and the carbs will foul on the fuel tank) so the LH carburetor is a very tight fit in the existing SRX stub.

The existing cables and hoses fit just fine. Use the SRX choke.

Standard TTR600 jets work fine with a K&N air filter and a Supertrapp exhaust (5 discs) but is rather loud.

A 2KF head and barrel swap would be good for the larger inlet valves. I have one waiting for the opportunity but the bike is so reliable that I do not want to disturb it.

Thanks a lot. This is a very interesting and a still not too complicated way to gain fun in the upper half.

I had one of the very last XT600E (2001), did not measure the diameter of the left carb when i refurbished it. Have to do some research on a calm evening.
The last XTs were quite weak (at least in Switzerland) as they had less than 40hp due to emission requirements. But it was still a true XT and made a lot of fun though.

By the way, is it correct, that you have to go for a 2 week quarantine if you want to go to another province in Australia?
Should go at the end of the month for a few weeks to WA, but for the moment it is quite unsure as we have been told, that we would be imprisonized ast the place of immigration (at the moment Melbourne as flights to Perth are difficult to get) and then again when arriving in WA for another 2 weeks.
It‘s an already postponed and imortant job but in that case neither me nor the client would like to go for that.

Hi Michael,

You could perhaps check online parts manuals for any bikes that use the left hand carburetor inlet stub part number 5CH1358600 as used on the TT6ooR from 1997. This is larger bore is to accept the new LH carburetor.

Regarding travel in Australia ...

Each state has its own border restrictions due to the very low vaccination rate in Australia. The restrictions may apply either to the entire departure state or just certain areas that have been visited in the past 2 weeks (risk zones).

These restrictions change on a daily basis, at the moment there is a large outbreak in Sydney.

I am unaware of any international transit facilities between WA and Victoria that could avoid a second quarantine in Perth. However, there are some exceptions for domestic interstate workers flying out to remote WA mines.

only in southern hemisphere? ;-) Thanks a lot, that´s so helpful. Good to know that for the moment travelling between Victoria and WA is not too regulated. 2 weeks in solitary confinement is absolutely enough wellness for a job of just a week in a mine.

Hi Michael,

I just measured 32mm for the LH carburetor bore at the head.

The SRX measures 29mm.

The TTR RH CV carburetor is physically larger overall ... similar to the XTZ660. However the bore at the head is 32mm which is similar to the SRX.
