Thanks to the incredible kindness and generosity of one of out members here, I received a Euro spec taillight, to replace the bulky USA spec unit on my bike. An interesting side-note is that the USA bikes also have a bracket for the license plate. Since the taillight protrudes so much further out, the bracket relocates the plane of the license plate about 1" further out from the normal plastic holder, so the illuminating light in the taillight better lights-up the license plate.
The net effect of swapping the taillight is not only the smaller design of the light itself, but the cleaner mounting of the plate beneath it.
